Blog: May 2017

So April has ended up being my first monthly blog of the year that I’ve missed (boo).  But I’ve just been so darn busy I haven’t had time!  So this is kind of a six week blog update and then I will try to post 4 weekly again.  So what have I been up to? Well I started April with choosing my next project to work on, which was going to be a runner platformer called Brexit Wars.  It was to be a tongue-in-cheek game that had you collecting £350m pounds for the British Empire, treading on all your citizens as you went, but alas, in the real world a General Election was called and killed half my jokes.  Granted it created a bunch more, but the point that stuck with me was that by the time the game was made, it’d be out of date. I’d be constantly updating to keep it relevant, and that seemed like an impossible task for a spare time developer - so I quit the project! That led me to pluck up the courage to tackle a game I’ve been wanting to do ever since I started to learn to code about 18 months ago.  The game is called Football Club Empire, and you can read more on the game page here.  This is by far my most ambitious project, and I envisage it will take a few months to even get to a starting position for testing.  So a big undertaking!  But I feel ready, and the few weeks I’ve put into it so far have been promising.  So what’s it all about? In Football Club Empire (FCE) you create your own football club and try to climb the pyramid to become the greatest club in the world.  It’s a sim management game where you are the Chairman, taking control of hiring/firing staff, building facilities, deciding on the cost of merchandise, etc. What perhaps makes the game unique is the mechanic of how you make your decisions.  Everything happens through conversations, whether it is with players, staff, media, or the accountant.  You are limited each week in how many conversations you have time to do, so you must choose what actions you will take and what will have to wait.  Every decision you make has a consequence, so you must decide how you want to run your club and live with the results of your actions.  This aspect is more akin to a text adventure game!  What this will hopefully do is make each player’s experience unique and evolve like a story. What I also want for the game is for it to be quite fast paced.  I love the Football Manager series, but I don’t play it because it takes 10 hours just to make your way through pre-season.  I don’t have that much free time anymore!  FCE will allow the player to play through a season in quite a short space of time.  There isn’t an opportunity to tinker with a hundred things, as you can only converse a limited number of times, meaning you must crack on with the matches to get more things done! For updates on my progress as I go, be sure to follow me on Twitter!  I will update the game page once I have a few features ironed out.  Hopefully I’ll have made some decent progress come my next blog!
